Tesla Model Y: boot space, seating & practicality
Fold the rear seats down and the Model Y offers plenty of cargo space, plus a frunk up front as a bonus
Length | Width | Height | Boot space (seats up/down) |
4,790mm | 1,921mm | 1,624mm | 890/2,138 litres |
Would it surprise you to learn that cargo space is another number Tesla doesn’t break down into metrics that allow it to be compared with other vehicles? Officially, it only provides the car’s total luggage space, which is 2,138 litres in all versions, and corresponds to the volume with the rear seats folded flat, plus the usefully large ‘frunk’ volume under the bonnet.
The volume of the regular boot with the rear seats in place should be pretty similar to the outgoing car’s 854 litres though, which sounds generous but is measured to the roof, rather than the window line as most other manufacturers quote. More importantly than the literage, it’s decently sized and shaped, and the seats fold 40/20/40, albeit not completely flat.
The low-slung battery enables a flat floor and passenger space is pretty good wherever you’re sitting, just as it was in the outgoing car. The cabin is airy too, in part thanks to the minimalist design, while front seat passengers now get the option of ventilated seats. Those in the rear benefit from the aforementioned eight-inch screen, which has its own climate functions and gaming apps.
