Like many hybrid SUVs, the Lexus NX comes packed with plenty of safety features as part of the comprehensive Lexus Safety System+ which is standard on all models. But it’s the NX’s strong performance in the Driver Power owner satisfaction survey that makes it stand out in the crowded electrified SUV segment – the best of which all come with lots of safety features too.

Lexus NX 300h reliability & problems

Lexus has a peerless reputation for reliability and when things do go wrong they’re sorted in a fashion that leaves customers in no doubt they’ve been looked after – according to the Driver Power owner satisfaction survey. The NX finished a highly commendable sixth overall in the 2018 edition of the survey, coming out top of the 75 cars surveyed for build quality, with only 6.6% of owners reporting a fault in their first year of ownership. The Lexus brand was outright winner for satisfaction, too.

In the 2020 edition, the NX had dropped to 42nd out of 75 cars, but still scored strongly for reliability, with a below-average problem rate of just over 11% reported. Lexus was once again named the most satisfying brand overall in this edition of the survey. Given that the NX has been around for a few years now, and the fact that versions of Toyota-developed hybrid drivetrains are installed in 1.5 million vehicles every year, the reliability picture is reassuring to say the least.

Safety

A five-star Euro NCAP crash-test result is par for the course for a family SUV like this and the Lexus NX didn’t disappoint. It was awarded an 82% rating for adult and child occupant protection and scored 69% for pedestrian protection. However, as of January 2021, its rating has expired, so it's no longer comparable with five-star scores awarded to newer cars.

The car comes with 14 airbags, including a knee airbag for the driver, while the Lexus Safety System+ includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assistance and chassis stability control. With optional 360-degree cameras and cross traffic-alert also in the mix, the Lexus NX wants for little when it comes to safety.
