New 2021 BMW X3 xDrive30e plug-in hybrid revealed

BMW’s mid-size SUV has received a facelift and is still available with plug-in hybrid power; deliveries to begin in September

The BMW X3 has been updated with sportier styling all round, while 48-volt mild-hybrid technology is now included with all non-plug-in hybrid models. The xDrive30e plug-in variant remains part of the range, with prices now starting from £50,600.

Outside, the iconic BMW kidney grille is now larger and consists of a single-piece frame. Adaptive LED headlights are now standard, but you can still upgrade to BMW’s Laser Lights, which have a range of up to 650 metres. New front and rear bumpers also feature on the updated 2021 X3.

Inside, the X3’s interior now matches that of the current 4 Series coupe, and includes a 12.3-inch central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. You’ll also be able to use your iPhone as a 'digital key' for the new X3, allowing you to lock and unlock the car’s doors and start the engine when the phone is inside the car. It's unclear if this functionality will be offered to Android phone users as well.

The X3 is still available as a company-car-friendly plug-in hybrid, with the xDrive30e variant producing 252bhp as before. That can be temporarily increased by 40bhp by using the electric motor's maximum output. The new plug-in X3 is capable of accelerating from 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds and has a pure-electric driving range of 31 miles. All-wheel drive and an eight-speed transmission remain standard for all plug-in hybrid X3s.

The new X3 is available to order now in either X Line or M Sport trim, with UK customer deliveries beginning in September 2021.
